Restless Legs - A Definition

Restless leg(s) syndrome is a disorder of the nervous system that affects sensation and movement in the legs and causes the limbs to feel uncomfortable. Relief can be temporarily gained by moving the legs which cause sufferers to seem fidgety and restless.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensory motor neurological movement disorder affecting approx. 12-15 million Americans. Very few healthcare providers really know of the existence of this syndrome.

Often misdiagnosed and/or unrecognized because of comorbid conditions, Restless Legs Syndrome is a lifelong condition with worsening symptoms for the patient. With no known cure, a treatment is often unsuccessful in alleviating the discomfort associated with the RLS syndrome.

The Restless Legs Syndrome can have a significant physical and emotional impact on people affected. The symptoms may interfere with their sleep, and as a result, they may feel sleepy during the day, too tired to participate in their daily activities.

Restless Legs Syndrome is a real medical condition (just not discussed in public as often as other medical conditions), like diabetes, acid reflux, depression, or high blood pressure. Many people who suffer from RLS are unaware that there is a name for their condition: It's called Restless Legs Syndrome.
